Most Bible teachers see David’s metaphor describing the filling of the Holy Spirit. If accurate, this is a regular experience of spiritual abundance that parallels Paul’s command to “be being filled with the Holy Spirit.” The variety of applications for oil pairs well with the variety of applications of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we are filled by the Sprit, we overflow. The big idea in one word – empowerment.
